Nani Sacro is a twelve-year-old girl born and raised on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. She would much rather spend her days at the beach surfing the waves than sitting in a classroom studying. The ocean is where Nani feels most at home—but she is about to discover that her connection to it runs much deeper than she ever imagined.

For as long as Nani can remember, Agnes has been her best friend. Unlike Nani, Agnes loves to study and always has her nose in a book. But when it's time for a break, you'll find her snorkeling beneath the waves while her best friend surfs . Despite their differences, Nani and Agnes make the perfect team

La Pared is one of Puerto Rico’s many beautiful beaches and a wonderful place for surfing. It is also home to Nani, who lives nearby with her mom, Carmen; her dad, Pepe; and her older brother, Nano. And just next door lives none other than her best friend, Agnes.

With the ocean never far away, La Pared is more than just Nani’s home.

One of Nani’s favorite Puerto Rican dishes is mofongo. She loves it with just about any type of meat, but her favorite is fresh seafood. Mofongo is a traditional Puerto Rican dish made with fried green plantains that are mashed and seasoned to create a delicious and flavorful meal. For Nani, nothing beats a plate of mofongo con mariscos after a day by the ocean!

Nani has always felt at home in the ocean. Whether surfing its waves or simply being near the water, the sea has always been a special part of her life. But one day, Nani touches the water—and everything changes. Suddenly, she can hear and see the creatures of the ocean in a way she never could before.
